May 5, 2020 Dear RSU 29 Students, Parents, and Staff: I hope this letter finds you well. These are challenging times for our students and families. Please know that your children (our students) are missed tremendously by the RSU 29 faculty and staff. I am writing to provide information as we approach the end of this school year. End of School Year Dates and Procedures: Remote learning opportunities will end for the summer on June 5th for our students (with the exception of our senior class – see below). The following week (June 8-12), will be utilized by our faculty and staff for remote professional development opportunities and to allow teachers to do the work necessary to conclude the school year. Houlton Elementary School, Houlton Southside School, and Houlton Middle/High School will continue with remote learning opportunities through Friday, June 5th. The latest push out of learning materials and lessons happened on April 29 – May 1 and is for the period ending May 22nd. There will be one final push out of learning opportunities on May 22nd that will be for the last two weeks of learning – ending June 5th. Information regarding the turn-in of school devices will be forthcoming as we approach the end of the school year. Houlton High School Seniors will conclude remote learning on Friday, May 29. June 1 through June 3 will be utilized for make-up work, turn-in of school devices, and completion of other items necessary to be prepared for graduation. We are planning on holding a graduation ceremony (a combination of virtual and in person – following all necessary guidelines and procedures) for the Class of 2020, on Thursday, June 4th. In the coming weeks, there will be more detailed information for the Class of 2020 from Houlton Middle/High School principal, Tim Tweedie. Meal Program Updates: Our amazing cafeteria crews, volunteers, and drivers continue to provide meals Monday, Wednesday, Friday at the provided sites. This program will continue throughout the summer, though there may be some changes or tweaks as we transition toward our regular summer meal program. We will keep you updated on any significant changes prior to them taking place. In addition to our current food service program we are delighted to be able to offer another opportunity for our RSU 29 families who may have found that they cannot get to the meal sites. This program called, Meals-to-You, is a limited opportunity offered until the end of June. Please see the accompanying letter for details and information to sign up. Thank you for your understanding and support as we work toward the close of what has been the strangest and most trying school year that I have ever experienced. Please continue to be kind to yourselves and one another during this challenging time. Together we will get through this and hopefully enter a time that allows us to return to a level of normalcy.
